Afera Releases New Position Paper: Impact of Release Paper Liner Colour on Material Circularity

Afera, the European adhesive tape association, has released a new position paper “Colour of paper release liner of adhesive tapes: Impact on material circularity” as part of the work undertaken by the Waste Management Workstream of Afera’s Flagship Sustainability Project (AFSP).

The Hague, the Netherlands – Afera, the European adhesive tape association, has released a new position paper “Colour of paper release liner of adhesive tapes: Impact on material circularity” as part of the work undertaken by the Waste Management Workstream of Afera’s Flagship Sustainability Project (AFSP).The document aims to help members understand the consequences of having a dark or a light release liner and support both tape manufacturers and tape users in their discussions with customers.

Release liner from adhesive tapes becomes waste upon application of the tape to the intended substrate. While the colour of the release liner has no bearing on performance, it does impact the end-of-life recycling options (open-loop or closed-loop). This is explained in Afera’s new position paper in an effort to improve release liner waste management and boost material circularity

Based on a survey conducted as part of AFSP, suppliers of release liners stated that there are no differences in the performance of a light versus a dark release liner, and they see no difficulties to supply any shade of release liner to the tape industry

Citing the position paper, Pablo Englebienne, Regulatory Affairs Manager at Afera says, “Switching dark release liners for light coloured ones would enable better recycling of paper release liner from adhesive tapes and better integration with ongoing efforts in adjacent industries.”
