Afera launches Task Force to strengthen packaging tape recyclability assessment

Posted on:

New industry initiative brings together technical experts to help ensure packaging tapes are accurately represented as Europe's Design for Recycling framework takes shape.

As implementation of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) gathers pace, Afera has established a new Task Force on Packaging Tapes in CEN Technical Specifications (TS) to help ensure that packaging tape applications are accurately represented within Europe's emerging Design for Recycling (DfR) framework. Bringing together experts from across the adhesive tape value chain, the initiative will support collaborative testing and technical engagement to help build the scientific foundation for future recyclability assessments.

he Task Force held its inaugural Meeting on 14 July 2026, where participants reviewed the current status of the CEN DfR TS, discussed key technical questions surrounding the assessment of pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tape constructions and identified priorities for the group's first phase of work. These include developing representative testing programmes, strengthening laboratory collaboration and improving confidence in recyclability testing.

By establishing the Task Force before the DfR framework is finalised, Afera is helping ensure that future technical discussions on packaging tapes are supported by practical industry expertise and robust scientific data. The initiative demonstrates the Association's commitment to contributing constructively to the technical work underpinning PPWR implementation and Europe's transition towards a more circular packaging economy.
