More than 165 participants attend Afera and IVK Webinar on new PCF calculation tool

Posted on:

More than 165 participants from 90+ companies and organizations within the adhesives and adhesive tapes industry attended the first in the series of 4 workshops on Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), which was held online on 6 June 2023.

Afera and the German Adhesives Association, IVK are jointly collaborating with Sphera, a specialized provider of sustainability consulting services to develop the sector-wide tool for harmonized PCF calculation of adhesives and adhesive tapes.

The webinar kicked off a series of workshops that have been planned as part of this collaboration. It was co-hosted by Vera Haye, IVK Managing Director, and Pablo Englebienne, Afera Regulatory Affairs & Sustainability Manager, and featured a detailed presentation by Margarida Gama, PCF expert and Senior Consulting Manager at Sphera.

The Product Carbon Footprint (PCF), one of the most established methods for determining the climate impact of a product, takes into account the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused to produce a product. With the availability of harmonized PCF data across the supply chain, companies will be able to track their Scope 3 emissions, aiding their efforts to reduce GHG emissions.

During the online session, the objectives, concept, calculation bases, industry standards and basics of the online tool were presented to all Members of both associations. The online session spanned 2 hours and included a detailed Q&A session. The recorded event will be made available to all Members.

The next 3 workshops

The 3 following workshops will be held face-to-face after the summer holidays, scoping and detailing the specific implementation of the PCF calculation tool according to the needs of the industry.

Harmonised Calculation of PCF of Adhesives and Tapes

The AFSP was set up with cooperation at its heart to solve problems that are too big for one single company to tackle. Joining forces with the liquid adhesive industry to develop a common approach and solution to calculate the environmental impact of adhesives and adhesive tapes is one such example.

The 2 associations are working with software developer Sphera on an online platform, access to which will be made available to Tape Manufacturer Members under an access fee.

The common goal is to ensure that Member Companies are soon able to determine PCF values for adhesives and tapes in a straightforward, harmonised, affordable manner. This will allow businesses to meet future legal requirements as well as the demands of the supply chain.
