Supporting the next generation of removable applications

Microsphere adhesives offer performance characteristics that distinguish them from conventional pressure-sensitive adhesives. Their structure enables substrates to maintain reliable adhesion while remaining removable and repositionable over extended periods. According to Jeff Burrington, Senior Application Specialist at H.B. Fuller:

“Traditional pressure-sensitive adhesives tend to increase adhesion over time as they fully wet out the substrate surface. Microsphere technology behaves differently, creating a discontinuous bonding structure that allows reliable holding power while maintaining clean removability and repositionability.”

This balance has made microsphere technology a preferred choice for applications ranging from removable labels and shelf marking to wall graphics, masking tapes, reusable stickers and office products.

“The result is an adhesive that stays in place when needed but can also be removed or repositioned without residue or surface damage, even after extended application periods,” adds Burrington.

The pressure-sensitive materials market continues to transform, driven by sustainability goals, new substrate developments and increasingly demanding application requirements. As converters and brand owners seek solutions that balance performance, functionality and circularity, adhesive technologies must keep pace. 

“Customers are increasingly working with recycled materials, low surface energy substrates and more demanding application environments,” says Burrington. “To address these challenges, H.B. Fuller is developing next-generation Gel-Tac™ microsphere technologies designed to enhance adhesion performance while preserving the repositionability and removability that define microsphere systems.”

These advancements are aimed at delivering higher tack, improved peel strength and greater substrate versatility, helping converters address new opportunities across labels, graphics and tape markets.

Investing in Europe to drive innovation and customer collaboration

A key milestone in H.B. Fuller’s strategy is the expansion of Gel-Tac™ microsphere adhesive production at its manufacturing facility in Pianezze, Italy. More than a supply chain investment, the project reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening its European production base and supporting customers with greater technical proximity.

According to Timo Gratilow, Europe Business Manager at H.B. Fuller: “Customers increasingly value suppliers that can provide not only innovative technologies but also reliable regional supply and technical support. Localising Gel-Tac™ production in Europe allows us to improve responsiveness, strengthen collaboration with customers and support regional growth.”

By bringing production closer to customers, the Pianezze facility can support faster product development, closer technical collaboration and greater flexibility in responding to new application requirements across labels, graphics and tapes.

The investment also supports H.B. Fuller’s sustainability ambitions. Producing within Europe reduces transportation requirements while the Pianezze site continues to advance initiatives focused on renewable energy, water recovery and resource efficiency.

“Our investment in Pianezze demonstrates our long-term commitment to the European market,” adds Gratilow.

Looking ahead

Trends such as linerless labelling, e-commerce growth, smart packaging, RFID-enabled solutions and increased use of recyclable and recycled materials are creating new opportunities for removable and repositionable adhesive technologies.
